Many states have officer units that exist for the sole purpose of catching those who are committing a drink driving offence these days. These officers are stationed at DWI Checkpoints around the states that have these units, and their sole purpose is to evaluate whether an individual is driving drunk, which is an attempt to cut down on instances of drunk driving.
Some private citizens and organizations have actually gone to court to try to have these types of units and checkpoints disbanded, claiming that they are unconstitutional, but the fact is that driving is a privilege – not to be confused with one of your constitutional rights.
You have the right to drink, if you are of age, but you do not have the right to commit a drink driving offence – and the states have the right to try to catch you if you are committing such an offense. Therefore, it isn’t any surprise that thus far, these private citizens and organizations have lost that particular battle – and the units and checkpoints still exist, and even more are being introduced because they are proving to be quite effective.
If you get a drink driving conviction, you will be faced with stiff penalties and a drink driving ban – losing your privilege to drive for a specified period of time. You can also be certain that your car insurance rates are going to go through the roof. In many states, this is not considered to be a traffic offense. Instead, it is an actual criminal offense, resulting in a criminal record that could follow you around for the rest of your life.
Avoid having a drink driving offence by making other transportation or travel arrangements before you begin drinking away from your home. There are many options open to you – and if nothing else, in most states you can actually call the local police station and request a ride home if you have been drinking – without facing any penalties.
