If you have been charged and convicted of DUI, or Driving under the Influence, you may find it difficult to find affordable car insurance. You must find an insurance company that offers drink driving car insurance, but if insurers know about your conviction, you will be classified as a high risk driver.
It is up to you whether you inform potential insurance companies about your DUI, but they will pull your driving record, and if the offence is on it, they may decide not to cover you at all, and even if you are covered already, when they pull your record again – as they do approximately every three years – if it is discovered, they could drop your coverage at that point.
Worse stil if you have an accident they will cancel your insuance so that you could be driving without insurance and get convicted of that too!
Depending on the state that you live in, or the country you live in if you have drink driving offences, you may be required to carry an SR-22, which is purchased through your drink driving insurance company. This significantly increases the cost of your insurance. An SR-22 essentially lets the state know that you are indeed covered by insurance, and if you fail to carry the SR-22 for the required length of time, you could lose your drivers license. Not all insurance companies provide SR-22s and not all countrys have the same codes.
If you have one DUI conviction on your record, you can get coverage, but if you have more than one DUI on your record, you may find it increasingly difficult to find any insurance company that is willing to offer you drink driving car insurance.Also if convicted a second time you chance of being locked is an increased possibility.
If you want to get lower rates for insurance, after getting a DUI, you should take a defensive driving course and a DUI course, as many insurance companies will give discounts for the successful completion of these courses. Drink driving car insurance is seldom cheap, but it is possible to find coverage, and again, you can reduce the rates somewhat by taking advantage of as many discounts as possible.It is best to shop around.
