After receiving a conviction for drunk driving, you will most likely have a drink driving ban, which means that there will be a period where your license is suspended, and you are not allowed to drive at all. However, once that period passes there will be requirements for getting your drivers license unsuspended and additional rules and regulations imposed on you as well.
First, before you license is unsuspended, you will have to have an SR-22. This is purchased through an insurance company, and its purpose is to prove that you have obtained insurance coverage. Your state will require you to carry an SR-22 for a specified length of time – typically for two to five years for one DUI offense. Should your insurance coverage drop for any reason, because you have an SR-22, the state will be notified of the lack of coverage, which could result in your license being pulled again.
Typically, when you get the SR-22, you will also purchase your car insurance at that time, even though your license is still suspended. This does not mean that you are eligible to drive at that point. It simply means that you are insured, and you have met the states requirement for the SR-22. You are not eligible to drive again until the state releases the suspension on your driver’s license.
What this means is that right before the time that your license is eligible to be unsuspended, you should start checking on car insurance rates for those who have a drink driving conviction, as well as the cost of an SR-22. When the date arrives that your license can be unsuspended, you will be prepared to move forward, and can literally have your drink driving ban lifted within days of that date.
Other things that may be required of you, depending on the state that you live in, include possible drink driving courses and alcohol awareness courses. Make sure that you check with your appropriate body to find out what the exact requirements are for you well ahead of the time when your license is scheduled to be unsuspended, so that you have the necessary time to meet those requirements.
